Glinda of Oz (1920, the last book written by Baum before his death)

Dhs. 2,517.00

First Edition, First Printing, First State (Verso on the half-title page lists titles through Glinda in Oz; and near perfect, fully legible type on page 150, indicating it was produced during the first press run). Includes 12 full color, full page plates illustrated by John R. Neill. Very good plus in publisher's black cloth variant with first state full color pictorial paste-down on the front cover. Light wear to the spine head and tail. Bit of foxing, in the margins only, to a small number of pages and plates. Lacking the very rare dust jacket. 4to. 279 pp. Overall, a wonderful copy of this important book in the Oz series.

This was the very last OZ book written by Baum, published after his death in May 1919, coming a year after The Magic of Oz, which was published to great acclaim just one month after Baum's passing. Baum died from complications developer after major gallbladder surgery. He completed Magic and Glinda, (in that order), during a short period when he rallied and prevailed over a month-long delirium from which he had not been expected to live. Magic and Glinda were the first books published after the end of World War I. Sales during the war years were modest at best, but Magic was a hit and sold 26,000 copies. Indeed, sales were so string that the publisher Reilly & Lee felt comfortable raising the price of Glinda to $2.00. It's unfortunate that Baum didn't leave to see this incredible turnaround, but he ended his life and the golden age of Oz storytelling on a high note.
