First Edition thus. Special Edition, 1946 Both volumes near fine, with bright boards, with clean and bright text, unmarred. Bindings square and tight. Housed in publisher's orginal pictorial in box in very good plus condition, with slight wear and chipping to the head and tail of the insert and some rubbing. This special edition of both books was designed by George Salter and the John Tenniel illustrations from the original editions were colored in the manner of the period by famous illustrator and artist, Fritz Kredel. Fritz Kredel was a renowned and versatile illustrator and artist. He found early success in Germany, culminating in a gold medal for Book Illustration at the 1937 Paris World Exposition. His success continued in the United States, where he illustrated a book written by Eleanor Roosevelt, and later was commissioned to design a woodcut of the Presidential Seal for John F. Kennedy's inauguration. Diverse and prolific, Kredel's illustrations are whimsical, detailed, and individual. 150, 166 pp. Small Octavo. A lovely and scarce set by the famous artist.
